Why Be Baptized?

In the Lutheran Faith we believe that a person is saved through the Grace of God and faith in Jesus Christ rather than through works. The Bible, Mark 16:16 RSV says: “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he who does not believe shall be condemned.”

Jesus himself said, “Matthew 28:19-20 RSV “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” Which is part of the mission statement of St. Paul.

Common Questions

We believe that the Bibles says infants and young children can believe (Matthew 18:6) that a new birth happens in baptism. However, since a child can not express this faith and fully understand a sponsor who will guide the child to grow in faith is required. This sponsor pledges to put into the hands of the child the 10 Commandments, the Apostle’s Creed and provide for their instruction in faith. Once baptized the child becomes the newest member of St. Paul.

Later usually 6th to 8th grade the child enters into “Confirmation” which is a class led by the Pastor which takes 2 years to complete.

However, people of all ages from infancy to adult can be baptized into membership in St. Paul.

A sponsor can be a God Parent usually someone close to the family and already a member of St. Paul. However, can be anyone wishing to accept the responsibility of helping the child grow in faith.

Generally, the parents are expected to become members of the church and be Christian.

The person being baptized is “sprinkled” with water three times, in the of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. Full immersion is generally not done in the Lutheran Church.

If you have been baptized in another Chrisitan faith it is not required to be baptized again to become a member of the church. Generally, you would need a transfer letter from your present congregation or take a new member class to become a member of St. Paul.
